Situation
After being devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the district was trying to get settled into new buildings. They were making positive strides but it wasn’t enough. District and school leadership wanted their good school to become a great school. JBHM was engaged to assist that effort.
According to Principal Dr. Cherie LaBat, “Bay Waveland needed help to do the work that needed to be done. We wanted our school to produce the BEST graduates. And to do that, we needed to become 21st century educators, beginning with me, the principal. That meant we needed to increase rigor, teach to standards, differentiate, scaffold, incorporate professional learning communities, and to do it now, and then keep on doing it.”

Results
The 2011 QDI report shows that Bay Waveland Middle School rose from a score of 161 to 178, or “High Performing.”
Dr. LaBat said, “We needed help, a partner who could give us an objective view of the culture and climate of our school. And that’s why we hired JBHM. It has not been an overnight process. It takes work, and you can’t rest on your laurels. JBHM has helped us to meet our goals and set a path for continued growth. Common Core Standards are coming, and we are going to be ready because it is what JBHM has always done anyway! Other schools in the district are beginning to work with JBHM as well. We are building a districtwide dialog among teachers and administrators.”
